AgResearch plays a key role in delivering new knowledge and technologies which underpin the pastoral, agri-food and agri-technology value chains. We do this by working closely with sector partners and our strategy is outlined in our Statement of Corporate Intent.
We are the lead Crown Research Institute in the following areas:
- Pasture-based animal production systems
- New pasture plant varieties
- Agriculture-derived greenhouse gas mitigation and pastoral climate change adaption
- Agri-food and bio-based products and agri-technologies
- Integrated social and biophysical research to support pastoral, agri-food and agri-technology sector development.
We work with other research providers and end-users to contribute to the development of the following areas:
- Biosecurity, land, soil and freshwater management
- Climate change adaption and mitigation
- Food and beverage sector (including foods for human nutrition and health, food technologies and food safety).
Alongside these capabilities AgResearch offers a range of testing and other services including:
The AgResearch Bioinformatics team provides consultancy, support and advice on high throughput data analyses in the areas of genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, along with support on Bioinformatics pipeline design and implementation.
AgResearch has a well-equipped, versatile Lincoln-based development engineering team that can provide you with a complete engineering service.
The Development Engineering team is geared to custom build equipment including measurement and control systems in support of R & D. We are also able to modify and improve existing products and processes. From an initial concept, products and processes can be taken through to various stages including basic prototypes, commercial prototypes and full commercial products.
AgResearch currently operates 10 farms throughout New Zealand, providing the company with the ability to undertake scientific work such as reproduction, parasitology, genomics, plant breeding, animal behaviour, immunology and disease management.
The farms, which employ 51 staff and are spread from Waikato to Southland, are predominantly sheep and beef but also include a dairy farm, a deer unit, a mixed cropping unit and a number of specialised facilities. Farm land type varies from intensive flats through to steep hill.
They provide services predominantly to AgResearch scientists, although external clients such as Livestock Improvement Corporation, Fonterra, DairyNZ and Plant and Food are also catered for.
DNA testing laboratory
Part of AgResearch’s Animal Productivity group GenomnzTM is the leading agricultural DNA testing laboratory providing the most comprehensive service for farmed species in New Zealand. Our services are available globally and utilised by farmers and producers worldwide.
Specialising in sheep, deer, dairy cattle, alpaca, goats, various finfish and shellfish species and plants, Genomnz processes thousands of samples every year on tests covering sequencing, single gene tests, microsatellite and SNP based parentage panels, and high density SNP chips.
Genomnz prides itself in offering a level of service customised to meet a particular user’s needs. We welcome the opportunity to discuss developing a DNA-based assay or service to suit the requirements of our clients.

We are plant technology providers – our products are proprietary technologies delivered through seed and our end users are farmers. We establish alliances with seed companies to commercialise our products.
Grasslanz Technology will build on its core strength of providing innovative forage technologies while embracing new opportunities offered by plant biotechnology. While remaining the world’s premier source of grass endophytes and white clover and a world leader in the development of temperate forage cultivars, we will seek opportunities to identify technologies that can be developed in other plant species.

INNERVISIONTM offers commercial CT scanning services for breeding stock evaluation, research programmes and veterinary diagnostic purposes.
INNERVISION operates a CT (computed tomography) scanner for use specifically on animals and for other ‘non-human’ applications. CT scanners use X-rays to produce cross-sectional images through a body, and to accurately measure the weights, volumes and densities of muscle, fat and bone without having to slaughter the animal and dissect the carcass.
INNERVISION is a joint venture between AgResearch and Landcorp Farming Ltd, and is located at AgResearch’s Invermay Campus near Mosgiel.

Margot Forde Germplasm Centre
The Margot Forde Forage Germplasm Centre is New Zealand’s national gene-bank of grassland plants, and also hosts the New Zealand Endangered Species Seed-bank. It is also Australia’s gene-bank for perennial grasses and legumes.
Plant germplasm consists of seeds of genetically diverse plant populations that are conserved for use in plant breeding and to ensure the survival of groups of plants.
The roles of the Centre are to obtain germplasm, to conserve it, replenish it and distribute it for research and product development.

The Metabolomics Centre of Excellence
The Metabolomics Centre of Excellence applies leading technologies and knowledge to improve our understanding of life processes at the molecular (metabolite) level.
Our technology aids the development of improved plant cultivars and livestock breeds, and helps to enhance our understanding of plant/microbe/animal interactions and the health and diseases of animals and humans. Our approach is to work alongside you to generate results that you can rely on.
Our extensive mass spectrometry capability includes a: Thermo ExactiveHi Res LC-MS; Thermo TSQ Quantum; 2x Thermo LTQ LC-MS-MS; Thermo DSQ GC-MS Orbitrap and; GC instrumentation. We provide state of the art sample handling, analytical techniques and instrumentation, data processing, and data interpretation. Our aim is to always provide a fast, reliable and cost-effective service for our partners.

RamguardTM offers a service for sheep and cattle breeders to select for Facial Eczema (FE) tolerance in animals. Animals are challenged with the facial eczema toxin and their tolerance measured in terms of the level of an enzyme in a blood sample.
Facial Eczema (FE) is a disease that can cause severe losses of production and death in animals. It is possible to select for animals that are more tolerant to the effects of the disease. This genetic improvement can be achieved without adverse effects on production and can have major, positive impacts on animal production and welfare.
RamguardTM is located at AgResearch’s Ruakura Campus.
