Biocontrol and biosecurity

Biocontrol & biosecurity is about the sustainable management of pests and weeds for the benefit on New Zealand’s pastoral sector and associated environments. Research includes the development of new biopesticides and technologies, and we play a role in making sure our national borders are well protected.

We also conduct research around the environmental safety of these control options and the impact of novel biotechnologies such as modified crops.

Pest control

Argentine stem weevils
Managing and reducing the populations of pests that cause damage to pastures and other farming systems.

Weed control

Scientist Graeme Bourdot examines thistle
Minimising the impact of pest plants that compromise the integrity of crops and pastures.

Border biosecurity

Footwear being checked at the border
Collaborative work to reduce the rate at which new pests arrive and become established in New Zealand.
