Our mission is to create a strong, sustainable pastoral agricultural sector for the benefit of New Zealand 

Our purpose

AgResearch is one of seven Crown Research Institutes in Aotearoa New Zealand. We are responsible for delivering innovative science and research outcomes specifically for the agricultural sector. 

Our core purpose is to deliver research to enhance the value, productivity and profitability of New Zealand’s pastoral,  
agri-food, and agri-technology sector value chains to contribute to economic growth and beneficial environmental and social outcomes for New Zealand. 

Our three goals are to:

  • Help foster and support prosperous land-based enterprises
  • Produce research that protects and enhances natural resources in a sustainable fashion
  • Contribute scientific understanding to added-value foods and bio-based products to meet evolving consumer demands.

Where we are

AgResearch has research centres and farms across the motu (islands).  We have two national centres (in Palmerston North and Lincoln), and two regional centres (in Hamilton and Mosgiel).

Message from the Chair

Science excellence is our primary focus at AgResearch and underpins our contribution to ensuring we have a thriving and growing economy and an agricultural sector that is efficient, sustainable and profitable.

We do this by offering world class science services of commercial value to customers. To ensure our science remains fit-for-purpose, we conduct detailed reviews of our research priorities to ensure they are focused on and aligned to what our shareholders and stakeholders require.

To achieve this, AgResearch is focusing our activities on:

  • Driving agri-science to meet the changing needs of the sector and consumers
  • Forming the best teams and co-designing with Māori, industry, farmers, government, other Crown Research Institutes and science organisations to deliver the most impactful outcomes
  • Building our capacity and capability to deliver to all agribusiness and to enrich our science in a uniquely Aotearoa-based way
  • Investing wisely in our people and our science to deliver the right science to meet New Zealand’s needs.
