Richard completed a Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia, UK, and subsequently undertook fungal molecular genetics research at Massey University, NZ, Tottori University, Japan, and West Virginia University, USA. He is a leading Epichloë geneticist whose research includes the identification of Epichloë alkaloid gene clusters, manipulation of these through gene editing, and the utility of Epichloë in modern cereals. He also leads research to discover and utilise endophytes in other crop species.
