Focus areas

This science programme has four key focus areas:

  • Innovative protein solutions and economic impact: Produce protein-enriched foods and dual protein systems to enhance New Zealand’s agricultural value 
  • Precision fermentation and high-value ingredients: Develop precision fermentation for high-value proteins and lipids to position New Zealand at the forefront of biotechnology-driven food innovation 
  • Food Processing and Safety Standards:Establish safety standards for emerging foods in collaboration with regulatory authorities 
  • Environmental Impact:Evaluate the environmental impact of emerging food production through Nutritional Life Cycle Assessment (nLCA) and guide policymakers, farmers, and businesses toward sustainable and nutrition food choices
