Supporting land use system transitions and utilisation for Māori agribusiness, enterprises, and communities.

Focus areas

This science programme has five key workstreams:

  • Toka Tūpari - Decision-making:Tools and processes to support land use decisions that align with Māori values, transition into diverse landscapes and economies, and enhance community resilience
  • Te Rourou - Whakapapa and Kai: Scale and accelerate localised kai production systems by leveraging the connection and practices of whenua Māori entities while delivering to community aspirations
  • Mana Whakatipu - Supporting Pathways for Taiao: De-risk land use transitions by creating a monitoring framework and indicators that includes the sharing of knowledge and enable opportunities for rangatahi Māori to enhance Māori agribusinesses and their communities
  • Āta Mātai - Innovation for Whenua Māori Farms:Develop innovations that leverage the linkages and integration of supply systems, including marae infrastructure, for products from whenua Māori
  • He Taonga, He Raraunga: Explore Māori data governance and IP Management best practice for government owned research organisations and partners looking at export opportunities, to enhance New Zealand’s international reputation.

Our capabilities

Watch below how we’re working alongside Māori to help unlock the potential of whenua-based enterprises, blending mātauranga Māori and science to grow prosperity and protect taonga for future generations.

Episode 1: Māori systems knowledge
Join Kairangahau Māori, Melissa Savage as she explores how we’re working with whānau and hapū to incorporate māutauranga Māori knowledge systems into everyday whenua decisions, to help ensure a sustainable and prosperous future.

Episode 2: Connecting whenua to the lab
Join Kairangahau Māori, Oriwa Tamahou as she discusses the value in connecting our Māori partners and scientists. By helping scientists integrate Māori values and aspirations into research, we create solutions that drive better decisions and stronger outcomes for Māori agribusinesses. This human science element helps align strategies to our partners’ kaupapa, while supporting diversification, resilience, and long-term profitability.

Episode 3: Opportunities across the value chain

Join Kairangahau Māori, Selai Letica as she highlights how we’re helping Māori landowners battle climate change and shifting markets to make decisions about transitioning their land into more sustainable and prosperous production.
